TOFU, MOFU, BOFU, and POFU keywords

Overview

TOFU, MOFU, BOFU, and POFU describe keyword intent by customer journey stage. This framework helps you choose the right content format, call to action, and measurement metric for each keyword.

The framework is also called a keyword marketing funnel because it maps search behavior from initial awareness through purchase and post-purchase retention.

Practical Application

  1. Classify keywords by likely user intent, not just by keyword modifiers.
  2. Check the SERP to confirm what Google currently rewards for the query.
  3. Assign each keyword to the content format that matches the funnel stage.
  4. Use stage-specific CTAs instead of one generic CTA across all content.
  5. Measure each stage differently: traffic for TOFU, leads for MOFU, revenue for BOFU, retention for POFU.
tip

AI can provide a first-pass funnel classification, but final classification should use SERP review, industry context, analytics data, and human judgment.

Common Mistakes

  • Treating every keyword as a direct sales opportunity.
  • Classifying keywords only by modifiers without checking SERP intent.
  • Creating TOFU content without internal links to MOFU and BOFU pages.
  • Ignoring POFU content even though existing customers often generate the highest lifetime value.
  • Measuring all funnel stages with the same KPI.
