Keyword clusters

Overview

A keyword cluster is a group of related keywords that share a common topic, search intent, or SERP pattern. Instead of creating one page for every keyword variation, keyword clustering helps you decide which terms belong on the same page and which need separate pages.

Keyword clusters are the foundation of pillar-and-cluster content strategy.

Core Concepts

Pillar keywordBroad topic that anchors the clusterbalance sheet

Implementation Workflow

  1. Choose a broad topic with enough search demand and business value.
  2. Collect related keywords from tools, SERPs, competitors, and customer questions.
  3. Group terms by intent and SERP similarity.
  4. Decide which keywords belong on the pillar page and which need cluster pages.
  5. Create the pillar page first or early in the sequence.
  6. Publish cluster pages for specific subtopics.
  7. Link cluster pages to the pillar and to relevant sibling cluster pages.
  8. Monitor rankings, clicks, engagement, and cannibalization.

Transactional Cluster Adaptation

For transactional intent, cluster pages should support conversion, not only education.

Common Mistakes

  • Creating separate pages for keyword variants with the same intent.
  • Building cluster pages without a strong pillar page.
  • Using internal links randomly instead of reinforcing topical relationships.
  • Mixing informational and transactional intent on one page when the SERP separates them.
  • Forgetting to update older cluster pages after the structure changes.
